What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, soothing approach that helps your body relax, restore, and heal itself.

Using a light touch, CST works with the natural physiology of the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround and protect your brain and spinal cord. By releasing tension and easing restrictions, this therapy encourages your nervous system to function at its best, leaving you with a greater sense of balance and well-being.

CST is based on the original work by osteopath William Sutherland in the 1930s who developed the foundational principles of cranial osteopathy. It was further developed into what we know today as Craniosacral Therapy by Dr. John E. Upledger, an osteopathic physician and researcher, whose work at Michigan State University in the late 1970s and early 1980s helped bring this gentle yet powerful therapy to life.

Many people choose Craniosacral Therapy not only to address specific concerns, but also as a way to support their overall health. By helping the body’s natural healing processes, CST can strengthen your resilience, reduce stress, and promote lasting wellness.

FAQ about Craniosacral Therapy

These are some of the most commonly asked questions about craniosacral therapy, including what actually happens during a session.

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?

Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch, hands on treatment. It releases areas of restriction in the Craniosacral System, which is made up of fluid and membranes which surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. These membrane are composed of fascia, a connective tissue that surrounds and connects every structure in the body. This whole body fascial network allows the therapist to detect areas of tension and restriction and help facilitate release where needed.

If it’s your first session with me we will have a detailed consultation to discuss your current health and the appropriate treatment.

During the session you lie on the treatment table fully clothed, shoes off; I will use a light touch, similar to the weight of a 10 cent coin. This is a hands on therapy, where we use our hands to palpate (listen) for restrictions in your body. These can lie anywhere and are not confined to the head and spine. Clients often report many different experiences during a CST session, ranging from seeing colours, having memories of past experiences, or noticing movements or changes in their bodies. Each session is unique as the body’s self-healing mechanism will address what is needed at that particular time.

Intake (first) session takes 75 to 80 minutes to allow time for a detailed consultation.

Subsequent sessions typically last for 60 minutes, with variations to account for individual circumstances and how the session progresses.

I would generally recommend a minimum of 3-5 sessions, but it  varies according to the individual and the reasons they’re seeking treatment. Many people use CST for maintaining good health because a session helps them to relax and re-balance their body, find calmness and improve vitality.

This therapy is client led which means you are always in charge. We allow the body’s natural movement to help you feel safety and to access the part where you need work. As long as you feel safe you can move and be in whatever position that helps you feel comfortable. The key thing in the treatment is for the client to find safety and normally this is through relaxation.

Yes, please just let me know about any difficulties you have lying on your back. I usually ask people to lie down on the couch, if this is not possible you can lie on your side, sit reclined, sit up or a mixture based on the needs of the client. I will use additional pillows/bolsters to make sure you are comfortable.

I also use a memory foam layer on top of the couch for additional comfort and support. My clients often find it more comfortable than lying directly on the couch and allows for a deeper experience.

Yes, totally normal. While some people feel more energised, some people feel more tired post treatment and you may wish to go to bed a little earlier.

Yes it’s very normal. Although we tend to think of our bodies in more physical terms, the body is in a constant state of changing emotion. Any event that leaves an imprint in our system will have an emotional connection and sometimes releasing it can also mean you temporarily revisit some previously trapped emotions.

Completely normal. As the body processes an old injury some old symptoms may reappear as they are released. You can contact me if any symptoms are unusual or if you are concerned.

No. Although I am Garda vetted to work with vulnerable people, any child under the age of 18 years of age must have a parent or nominated caregiver present throughout the duration of the treatment.
